ERGONOMIC TASK FORCE (E.T.F.)
UAW ETF

The ETF stands for the Ergonomic Task Force. We are appointed Representatives by the Chairman of our local 2244 & the International UAW.  Our function is to evaluate problem jobs and make recommendations for improvements to help reduce injuries to the team members.

When a possible ergonomic injury is reported to the medical department it is the responsibility of the UAW Ergonomic Task Force to go and interview the injured worker. The ETF then determines if it is an ergonomic injury and what burdens need to be reduced to help avoid future injuries. The ETF must evaluate the jobs in the team from where the injured team member works. This takes time because the jobs must be filmed and every movement must be recorded. We gather all the postures, push/pull forces, weights, reaches, and equiptment use required by the team member on the job. Example what kind of gun does he use? How many bolts does he shoot? How many clips are installed? What force does it take to install the clip? This information is compiled and input into a program called the NEBA which calculates the burden from the job.

The ETF uses this information along with team member input to come up with possible counter measures that are presented to the management for implementation. The ETF representative must follow up with the Group leader, Assistant Manager, and Manager to insure that counter measures are being implemented. If the burdens are not reduced within the allotted time frame per our CBA, it is turned over to the monthly Joint Safety meeting for review.
