The Civil Rights committee shall consist of ten (10) members. The Committee serves as a guardian over the Local Union's interest to assure members full rights regardless of religion, race, creed, color, sex, political affiliation, national origin, age or handicap. They shall inform members of steps and procedures, including filing of complaints and hearings, whenever a member or members believe their rights have been violated, either by management or other union members. The Committee, in cooperation with the UAW Civil Rights Department, works toward the elimination of discrimination in the workplace, the community, and the nation.

The Conservation and Recreation Committee shall consist of ten (10) members. They shall work to promote meaningful recreation and leisure-time activities and also develop action programs to help correct energy and environmental problems. Service in these areas is provided by the Conservation and Recreation Department of the International Union.

The Women's Committee shall consist of ten (10) members. The Committee conducts programs which are of special interest to women, and encourages them to become active. They shall carry out the policies and program of the Women's Department of the UAW.

The Community Services Committee shall consist of ten (10) members. It shall be the responsibility of this committee to obtain knowledge of the functioning of the various health and members, represent the Union at funerals of members and their families, send flowers to such funerals and take up collections for members in distress.

ARTICLE 12 - Elections

Section 1. The Election Committee shall consist of fifteen (15) members.

Section 2.  The Election Committee shall be nominated and elected at the Regular Membership Meeting preceding that of the nominations for Local Union executive officers. The Election Committee shall serve a three (3) year term.

Section 3. The Election Committee shall be governed by the "International Guide for Local Election Committees."

(a) All notices of Local Union elections shall be accompanied by a posted copy of Section 1 of the UAW Ethical Practices Code as approved by the Twenty-Second Constitutional Convention of April, 1970.

(b) Election challenges are provided for by the International Constitution. While challengers have a right to observe all activities of the election workers, they must make their observation in such a way as not to interfere with the election procedure. (In the event a candidate in a Local Union election chooses to have a challenger present at said election, the candidate will bear all expense incurred by challenger and the Local Union will not be responsible for any expense of the challenger).

Section 4. Nominations for Executive Officers, Executive Board Members-at-Large, Bargaining Chairperson, Bargaining Committeepersons, District Committeepersons, Alternate Committeepersons and Coordinators shall take place at the Regular Membership Meeting in May.

Section 5. Nominees can either accept at the nominating meeting or take up to five full days following nominations to accept in writing to the Chairperson of the Election Committee or at the Local Union Office.

Section 7. Voting at the General Election shall take place over a period of twenty-four (24) hours. Counting of the ballots shall start immediately after closing of the polls. The Election Committee shall be paid all Lost Time.

Section 8. General Election runoffs shall take place as soon as possible following the General Elections.

Section 9. The Bargaining Committee, District Committeepersons, Alternate Committeepersons and Coordinators areas shall be designated by the Bargaining Committee Chairperson prior to the nominations of the General Election.

The Citizenship and Legislative (Community Action Program) Committee shall consist of ten (10) members. They shall select from their Committee the members who shall serve as delegates-at-large to the UAW Northern Area CAP Council. It is the in-plant political/legislative arm of the Local Union and is the vital workplace political activator. The CAP Committee is the basic link with our members at work in assisting the implementation of registration and get-out-the-vote drives, dollar drives, letter writing campaigns, publicizing the issues and positions of public officials, encouraging special groups in the plant–youth, women, minorities–to become active.

The Constitution and Bylaws Committee shall consist of ten (10) members. As spelled out in Article 44 of the international Constitution: The Constitution and Bylaws Committee of each local union shall perform the duties of setting up and monitoring the Local Union Bylaws, along with following the approval procedures. This Committee is charged with the responsibility of submitting proposed changes to the International Constitutional Conventions.

The Consumer Affairs Committee shall consist of ten (10) members. The Committee strives to keep the membership informed on truth in lending, truth in packaging, truth in advertising, labels on products, price and quality of the goods he purchases, and fraud and overpricing at the market place so that each member can obtain maximum value for monies spent and to protect the Union members as a consumer.

The Education Committee shall consist of ten (10) members. They shall organize education classes at least once a month, the primary purpose of which shall be to promote the Union Cause. They also arrange for films, materials, outlines, guides, and speakers in order to inform and educate the Membership on issues, train all bargaining committeepersons/coordinators, leaders and mobilize greater solidarity.

NEWS STAFF

The Newspaper Committee shall consist of five (5) members. They shall publish a monthly Union-printed newspaper which will promote the welfare of labor as a whole. They will meet once a month and edit articles for publication and distribution in the week prior to the Regular Membership Meeting. The Chairperson of the Committee shall be designated as Editor and her/his name shall be on the newspaper masthead.

The name of the Local Union Newspaper shall be Local 2244 Labor News.

The following columns shall be included in each issue: President, Financial Secretary, Chairperson of the Bargaining Committee, Letters to the Editor. All articles shall be signed.

The newspaper shall not contain personal attacks on fellow Union members, nor shall it be used as an instrument for factional political purposes.

A majority vote by the Committee shall be required to reject an article. Rejected articles shall be returned to the authors with the reasons given therefore. Authors of rejected articles may appeal to the Membership, if they so desire.

They shall help to emphasize the importance of supporting those goods produced in union shops, by union members under the union-won working conditions. This committee also helps bring to the attention of our members those products produced under the non-union conditions and by anti-labor manufacturers.
